Apple Macbook Pro 16 2021 M1 Pro In Review

The CPU part of the SoC is the same for both chips, with both having eight performance cores and two efficiency cores. However, they differ in the number of GPU cores, memory bandwidth, and the number of hardware video encoders and decoders. The M1 Pro has a 200GB/s memory bandwidth, one video decoding engine, one video encoding engine, and one ProRes encoding and decoding engine.

Contrary to the smallerMBP 14, Apple only ships the MBP 16 with the fastest M1 Pro SoC, which offers 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores. However, the M1 iGPU is much more efficient and requires less power. The M1 Pro consists of two efficiency clusters in combination with two performance clusters with 4 cores each (up to 3.2 GHz).

I don’t think those are the people Apple is trying to court, though. Instead, the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros seem like an attempt to get back in the good graces of audio and video producers. Apple’s new chips will certainly be more than enough for dealing with media. Both computers managed to convert a 4K video clip to 1080p in 34 seconds with Apple’s VideoToolbox hardware encoder, which is four seconds slower than the NUC 11 Extreme, but four seconds faster than the XPS 15. The Apple provides a better user experience with a sharper, brighter, and more colorful Mini LED display, a sturdier all-aluminum build, a much better haptic touchpad, and longer battery life. Even though it’s slightly heavy, it’s still fairly thin and compact for a 16 inch device and should fit into most bags. The keyboard feels comfortable to type on, the touchpad is gigantic and responsive, and the webcam’s video quality is excellent. Its port selection includes a full-size HDMI port should you need to connect to an external display for presentations, but you’ll still need dongles for your USB-A peripherals. Its M1 Max SoC can handle most tasks like text formatting, web browsing, and spreadsheets with ease, and thanks to its power efficiency, the battery lasts easily through a typical 8-hour day with plenty of charge to spare. If you want to charge your laptop on the go, you’ll need to purchase a power bank separately. The Apple MacBook Air 13 and the Apple MacBook Pro 16 are both productivity-focused laptops with many similarities. The most notable difference is that the MacBook Pro 16 uses an x86 Intel 9th Gen CPU with AMD Radeon Pro graphics, while the MacBook Air uses Apple’s ARM-based M1 SoC, though it can still run x86 programs through Rosetta 2. The MacBook Pro is a better choice for creative professionals because its discrete GPU performs much better for graphically demanding tasks than the M1’s integrated graphics. Also, it doesn’t suffer any performance loss over time, whereas the MacBook Air throttles because it’s a fanless device.
